What Sofia Coppola Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked Sofia Coppola, whose new movie Priscilla opens on November 3, about the men’s shirt she wears as a uniform on set, the mug that makes her feel like she’s in Italy, and the tote bag she owns in multiple colors.

I love this tea. I start every day with it, and I also have it on set and take it when I travel. A friend of mine had a friend who was a tea sommelier, and she said that Yorkshire Gold was the best tea, so that’s when I started drinking it, and now I’m very attached to it. I look forward to it in the morning and I drink tons of it, then I’m sad when I have to stop drinking it at the end of the day. It gets me through my shoots.

I’ve been going to Joanna for years, and I love this mask as a little spa treatment at home, or when you’re traveling, or after summer with all the sunscreen and stuff. It’s gold and it feels nice and it’s just like having a little beauty moment to yourself. You feel a little more awake and refreshed after using it, like an instant facial. It’s always a nice break from busy life. It feels indulgent.

These are from my brother’s company. They’re made from leftover fabric from sailing canvas. I love them. They’re heavy-duty and wear in really well. I used a bunch of them this summer. They’re good for the beach, travel, and just hauling stuff around. They’re especially great to have on set. I don’t have a locker or trailer, so I always have that big tote bag full of all my camera stuff and my tea and all my things. I also think it’s a bummer to use grocery bags, so these are nice to have because they’re cheerful and come in bright colors. I like the multicolor ones because they’re just random combinations. And then, of course, I have a navy one for travel. I also have a bright-pink and bright-yellow one. It’s hard to choose.

These are men’s pants. I just got a pair from the store in Little Italy but then ended up getting more because I love them for work. They’re just easy. They’re part of my uniform. They’re good for being on set or running around. I wear them everywhere. They have a kind of slouchy men’s-trouser fit, maybe in a Lauren Hutton way, with the pleats. They can be dressed up or down. I like men’s clothes anyway, and Noah has cute, simple, classic easy things.

I like not having to think about what I’m wearing — especially when I’m shooting or when I’m working — so I have a wardrobe of a bunch of Charvet men’s button-down shirts. I’ve been wearing those forever, since Marie Antoinette, probably. When I was living in Paris, I went to Charvet, and it was really fun to go pick out fabric and make custom shirts or just buy the men’s shirts that they have. They’re beautiful quality, last forever, and are just super-easy to wear every day. On set, it gets hot, so you have to dress in layers, and I like to look professional. I don’t want to be in a T-shirt. I think my dad always wore a suit to set, and Fellini dressed to go to set, so there’s that tradition and respect that you dress professionally to go to work, although I’m a casual person.

I’ve always loved this soundtrack. It’s the one I put on when I’m just home or in the kitchen, when I want something relaxing. I’m also sentimentally attached to it because I remember my dad making that movie when I was a kid. I love the visuals and the look of that movie. I like listening to the whole album. I put it on and get into the whole thing and the atmosphere. It’s like background music.

This is my favorite film. I’m so happy they still make it. There was a shortage at one point, but I’ve been using it for a while. It has a nice, soft color quality, and it’s not too contrast-y. I use that in my Contax T3 when I’m taking pictures on set. It’s my favorite combination.

My friends gave this to me for my birthday. I use it every morning, and it makes me happy because it’s such a beautiful object. I love to start my day with a beautiful object and my favorite tea. I love that it has a lid on it because I like my tea to be hot. It looks like it belongs in a beautiful palazzo, not in New York, and it makes me feel spoiled. It also reminds me of my friends who gave it to me. And I love china. I love a table setting. I love beautiful dishes.

My dad made a drink named after me when I was in my 20s. Now it’s commonplace, but it was the first sparkling wine in a can. It’s always been something fun to have and throw in your pocket to go to a screening or take on a picnic or whatever. I think it’s cute to have a pink can of Champagne. You can keep them in your fridge when you just want a glass of Champagne and don’t want to open a bottle and make it a whole thing. I like the casualness of special things.
